Types of rice
There are numerous variety of rice. India has already decided to split its 11 Basmati varieties,
notified under the Seed Act, into traditional and crossed categories both for the domestic market and export
labeling. Given the huge gap in prices, this differentiation is expected to ensure greater transparency in the
export business of Basmati Rice as customers would now know what varieties they are purchasing. It is also
expected to create a distinct market for the crossed Basmati varieties.
These are currently used largely for mixing with the premium traditional Basmati, as they are more abundant.
